Got winter heating costs blues? Time of Day rate offers a cost-saving solution

Winter heating costs typically account for 25 to 50 percent of a home’s total energy expense, leaving many homeowners longing this time of year for cost-saving solutions. For Roanoke Electric Co-op’s member-owners, one proven solution that can result in savings year-round is its Time-of-Day rate program.

It helps member-owners reduce their monthly electric bills by modifying their energy consumption patterns. Participants save on average $35 per month in electricity costs, when they take advantage of lower rates during off-peak times.

On- and off-peak times are as follows:

Oct. 16 – April 15:

  • On-Peak Hours:  6:00 AM to 9:00 AM, Monday – Friday
  • Off-Peak Hours:  All other hours

April 16 – Oct. 15:

  • On-Peak Hours: 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Monday – Friday
  • Off-Peak Hours:  All other hours

“As your co-op, we are able to offer you lower rates during off-peak hours, because our costs as a utility are typically lower during these times,” said Kirby Jordan, the co-op’s vice president of member services, marketing and public relations. “Our Time-of-Day rate allows us to reward member-owners with a discount for helping us spread the co-op’s demand more evenly.”

There is no cost for member-owners to sign up for the voluntary rate program.  As part of the service plan, the co-op will replace the member-owner’s current meter with a special time-of-day meter.  The co-op will also provide participants a breakdown of on-peak and off-peak usage on their monthly electric bill.
