Clock is ticking for basketball camp scholarship applications
The buzzer will sound soon for rising sixth, seventh and eighth graders to apply for an all-expenses-paid basketball camp scholarship opportunity.
Touchstone Energy Sports Camp scholarship applications are due by the end of this month. The scholarship will help Roanoke Electric Co-op send one young man to the Roy Williams Carolina Basketball Camp, June 22-26, at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and one young woman to the Wolfpack Women’s Basketball Camp, June 9-12, at North Carolina State University in Raleigh.
“These scholarships are a fantastic way for young athletes to experience life on a college campus and learn from mentors at their favorite NCAA athletic programs,” said Marshall Cherry, the co-op’s chief operating officer. “We’re proud to reward local students for their hard work by providing this exciting opportunity to have a great time, make new friends, and develop fundamental skills that will help them excel on and off the court.”
At camp, students will work directly with the players and coaches to learn basketball skills, as well as leadership and teamwork.
To be eligible for a scholarship, students must be in sixth, seventh or eighth grade during the 2019-2020 school year. Students currently in eighth grade are not eligible for the scholarship program, per NCAA rules and regulations.
Applicants must have permission from a parent or guardian to attend and must provide their own transportation to and from the camp if selected. Applicants will be judged on academics, extracurricular activities and an essay.
Applications and more scholarship information can be found here. Applications must be received by Sunday, March 31, with winners expected to be announced by the beginning of May.
